Description:Nexium Control Capsules (Esomeprazole Magnesium Trihydrate) are used to treat frequent heartburn (heartburn that occurs more than 14 days after eating). They are also used to lower the risk of stomach ulcers and other stomach-related problems. Nexium Control is an over-the-counter (OTC) drug. Ask your pharmacist what to do if you have questions. Nexium Control is best used when a doctor has recommended an over-the-counter (OTC) drug for you. It is important to remember to use this drug at the same time every day.
Directions:Nexium Control is a prescription drug. Do not take Nexium Control more than once a day. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist. Do not take this medication if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. On October 10, 2004, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a major warning to patients that a generic version of Nexium (esomeprazole) could cause serious stomach problems, including ulcers. Nexium (esomeprazole) is a brand name for the drug Prilosec. Nexium is used to treat conditions, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), heartburn and acid reflux. However, it also is used in children to treat a rare but potentially fatal condition called Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, which occurs when the stomach cells release too much acid. Prilosec is available in several forms, such as tablets, capsules, and liquid. Prilosec is sometimes used in children as a treatment for stomach problems. This is because the effects of Nexium are similar to that of other medications used to treat Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, such as Zollinger-Stoepfer and Zollinger- Hammerberg. In addition, there is no known way to make Prilosec stronger or more effective than the drug Prilosec manufactured by Eli Lilly and Co. (Lilly). Nexium® is a generic form of the drug that is also sold under the brand name Prilosec®. Nexium is a prescription medication, meaning it is prescribed under a prescription.
While some experts believe the FDA approved Nexium® for the treatment of reflux esophagitis, others have not seen a major increase in the number of reflux symptoms. The FDA has issued a safety alert for the drug to lower the risk of heart disease, which may be linked to heartburn and acid reflux.
AstraZeneca has not been involved in any form of clinical trials of Nexium® since 2017.
The FDA has also not approved or supported the use of Nexium® for patients with a history of heart attack or stroke.
In October 2017, AstraZeneca issued a safety alert for the drug for the treatment of heart disease.
